solar powered city.

this probably isn't an option for los angeles. scottish architecture firm zm architecture have come up with a brilliant scheme to provide solar power to the city of glasgow, solar lily pads which will float in glasgow’s river clyde and soak up the sun’s rays, sending electricity to glasgow’s grid while also stimulating urban riverfront activity.

art-decko

jonathan sandridge is an artist based on burlington, vt. he has a blog and a website and a flickr gallery that are all worth spending time on.

stately, plump buck mulligan came from the stairhead

james joyce, drawings and other objects runs from 2 may through to 14 june at kemistry gallery.

could be the novel designs motto...

bob never yells about the picture now, hes having too much fun

matt porter chose the greatest photographic subject matter imaginable.

makin' things with light, outta sight

nova consists of twenty five thousand luminescent spheres, which can be activated one by one, which are equipped by twelve light emitting diodes each, and which can light up in a colour depth of sixteen million colours and be provided with new information on a screen refreshment rate of twenty five pictures per second. The display can show two-dimensional images as well as three-dimensional abstract content. in layman's terms. wow. so next time you're passing through the swiss federal institute of technology check it out.

lervik meanwhile has reinvented the door.

the light switches as you lock or unlock. enough said.

i guess i must be having fun

i am blending pride for novel designs crossing the one thousand hit mark with guilt for not posting yesterday. the result is novel designs posts aplenty. here is some work by josh cochran.

you've left your heart in the portland rain

mcsweeney's published a book by john glassie called bicycles locked to poles and its one of the more nostalgic collections of photos i can imagine seeing. thanks also to things magazine which apparently knows how to do what it does very very well.

to do list: read all the books i've bought and not read, listen to all the albums i've bought and not listened to

things magazine has an amazing collection of pelican covers online. they’re sorted by era and there are a ton of them. i was gonna just put up a few, but couldn't help myself. this is just so far up the novel designs alley.

we left paris on a one way road

despite, or maybe because of working in hwood, i think we at novel designs have a very skewed sense of celebrity and success. the pinnacle of hipster music cool these days is pretty much unequivocally an appearance on la blogotheque (more so even than a best new music on pfork) and today marks the appearance of noah and the whale, a band i mostly love because i was schooled with the drummer and lead singer. watching any band play paris (in the most literal sense) is pretty cool, but seeing doug and charlie has got me all worked up. CAP has experience this already with vw, so she's over it. meanwhile i'm starstruck by my own friends and wishing that were the case more often.

everyone makes history, looks back on it wistfully

in addition to owning the sweet looking brown bear store in sf, akasha rabut takes some pretty special photos. here are some of big sur and some other pacific beach. i'm gonna track down the budweiser bathing suit for CAP.

play it cool and saran wrap all you can

scott hansen is a san fran based graphic designer (under the moniker iso50) and musician (tycho) whose work i've been tracking for a few years. he's a master of tbat california-meets-scandinavia aesthetic. more recently he's started a blog which is worth paying atttention to as he introduces other artists and notes classic albums and album covers.

the howling fantods

i check the interweb pretty regularly for news on dfw, new writings, maybe even videos and today i hit youtube jackpot.

addendum: i've spent a lot of time on this site as it appears to be the best means of keeping up to date with dfw. today for the first time i stumbled on this page which has collected all of his uncollected works. a number of lunchtimes will be spent combing through this.
