today, john mccain announced his plan to balance the federal budget by the end of his first term 2013. how exactly is he going to do this you might wonder? according to the nytimes "it is unclear." especially given his plans to keep troops in iraq and afghanistan and extend the bush tax cuts. while mccain's budget plan doesn't contain any actual numbers, it does include vague ideas like: "Reserving all savings from victory in the Iraq and Afghanistan operations in the fight against Islamic extremists for reducing the deficit."
josh marshall at talking points memo wonders if "McCain's people do realize that there is no budget mark down for 'victory'...And if his four-year balanced budget promise is premised on rapid victory in both theaters, isn't that sort of arbitrary timelines on steroids?"

elsewhere, obama art gets a little less hopeful in the wake of his FISA vote. this seems like an appropriate time to post some pics from under the radar's protest issue.

printed media may be a dying form these days, what with all the stellar blogs out there vying for our limited attention spans, but these two mags stand out for their editorial choices and interesting photography. death + taxes bills itself as a "tastemaker's music magazine - the definitive source for emerging music and counterculture." 'sup pursues a similar agenda and offers pdf downloads of all issues. as evidence of their good taste, both recently featured portraits of the grizzly bear boys.

from nymag: Herzog had once promised to "eat his shoe" if his friend Errol Morris ever finished a film; upon the occasion of the release of Morris's Gates of Heaven, Herzog did just that. Blank's camera captures Herzog simmering his shoe in duck stock with garlic for five hours, then sitting down at a table before a Berkeley audience with a bottle of beer and poultry scissors, fielding questions from the crowd about his friend's achievement.
